This is a reflection on the sea in contemporary consciousness. In Melbourne, Australia I drive past the port noting the shipping containers with Hamburg emblazoned on them – signifying vast journeys across oceans. Remembering beach holidays near Sydney Harbour, I draw parallels with the seaside in Northern Europe. In contrast are the extreme sea journeys taken by those who seek a safe haven in Australia and Europe. Back and forth, skimming and looking beneath the surface, these double-sided sculptures reference the multi-layered nature of the sea.
